Surfing dates back to times as early as the 1700's in the Hawaiian Islands when the first boards were carved and shaped from the Koa tree that grows there. These boards were long and heavy. The Chief always paddled out on the best board shaped from the best tree. Surfing, or he'enalu, was not a recreational sport, a hobby or career. Instead, it was the way of life, an integral element of their culture and a true art form. Although a lot has changed through time and the boards that we now ride are lighter, shorter and not carved from a solid piece of wood, the soul of surfing still lives today.
